Every Tuesday and Thursday morning we do a two hour literacy
and numeracy session with ten boys from Sisco. The boys are aged 10-16 and all
have varying abilities. Alex has been leading the sessions, while we are there
to provide one on one help for the boys. So far we have focused on sentence
formation and from there we have moved on to the boys having enough confidence
to read aloud in front of everyone and writing their own life timelines. Not
only has this been beneficial to their literacy skills, but in helping them to
open up about their backgrounds and how they have ended up at Sisco.
Many of them are keen to go to school and the introduction
of these sessions to the programme is a good transition into learning for them.
At the moment the boys are not prepared to go to school as their concentration
is poor. However, their enthusiastic attitude and willingness to learn is
promising.
