Group 1: Isaac, Emma, Fiona, Nathi

Our third day at Umthombo started much like the others; we are starting to get into a routine. We were picked up by the usual 5 seater car, into which climbed 6 of us. We then attended the morning meeting which, again as always, began with a prayer in Zulu.

The staff had prepared a group program for the kids which, unfortunately for us, was conducted entirely in Zulu. Though we didn't understand the vast majority of it, it was good to see the kids being enthusiastic and interacting with each other. They also did an exercise on self esteem as they were asked to draw things that they were good at and someone they considered heroic.

The rest of the morning was slow - most of the kids were out surfing which left us very little to do, especially as the pool cue had been broken in half. Isaac took eight kids down to the beach for a football game. However by the time they had got to the beach the kids had decided amongst themselves that it was too hot for football and they would just go in the water.

Nathi spent a lot of time with one kid in particular today who showed him pictures of the Umthombo football team and told him about all the games they played against the Brasileiros and the Philippinos in the Street Children World Cup. The boy then introduced him to some of the other kids that were very talented beatboxers, so they showed off theirs skills and Nathi gave it a bash.

The afternoon was a little more productive; we did some basic work on the Umthombo garden. It was only recently given to them by the municipality so it is in its early stages but it could be worth making something of in terms of our volunteering.

As we were leaving we were informed that our drama programme which hadn't gone ahead the other day would take place tomorrow morning.
