Gap Year Students

Max & Isaac

Since arriving in South Africa on Tuesday, the days have been full on, productive and enjoyable.

After settling into Durban, we started fresh on Wednesday morning, making our first outing to Umlazi with Emmanuel. I had my first experience of a South African taxi, otherwise known as a Khumbi, which are very chaotic, and I’m yet to get my head round how much of a contrast it is from the dull, mundane public transport system we have in Edinburgh.

We then visited a creshe not far from the main road into Umlazi, which I have arranged to visit a few times every week. We were greeted by a chorus of singing from the children, ranging from traditional Zulu songs, to “Old MacDonald had a farm”, making us feel warm, welcome, and looking forward to coming back for a greater deal of time next week.

We then went on to briefly visit SISCO, where the work put in by all members of staff really is evident. Although the building where they are based is far from complete, it is definitely beginning to achieve its main goal, which is providing a safe haven for the children of the streets.

On Friday we managed to visit Bobbi Bear, a brilliant charity that works with and upholds the rights of abused children. Bobbi Bear's Eureka gave a stunning introduction to the charity, and after handing over a suitcase full of donated clothes I arranged to visit the organisation every saturday.

We have also managed to establish two weekly sessions with the kids of Umthombo, working in co-operation with rapper/staff member, Sihle, in which they will do a series of “hip hop workshops”, with the goal of recording a song in a music studio at the end of the month, word...
