Gap Year Students

Isaac

The last couple of days have most certainly been interesting.

Yesterday I was in the Umhlanga Jewish Day School for the day. It is a new school and, although they have got off to a flying start in the most part, they have been having a little trouble in catering one pupil whom they believe to have Autism. I have a number of friends who are staff at the school and they know my background is in special needs. I was very flattered that they asked me to come in to shadow her class and make some suggestions for them. It was a very nice day.

Today is Freedom Day in South Africa. It is a public holiday. When people have asked me what I am doing for the long weekend, all I can answer them with is that street children don't get a long weekend.

So I started the day at the SISCO office where we had arranged a planning meeting for 9am. It was silly of me not to assume that they would change the meeting to 10am without telling me. Eventually, four out of the five people meant to be at the meeting arrived. Not a bad ratio.

We are slowly getting there on the admin side which needs a serious amount of work but there was some sad news. The first thing Russel asked me to do was write a letter to the media inviting them to the closing of SISCO's centre on Thursday 3rd May. I guess we knew this day would come; we were aware from the start that our permission to use the building was only temporary. But unless someone can give us R5million in the next few days these kids will be out on the street again by next week.

There's not a lot we can do now but plan for the future. Happy Freedom Day.
